Our partnership with Brightseeds: Their story and why it matters
Our new partners, Brightseeds, have a mission to empower Ukrainian children through global education, to rebuild for tomorrow. Its co-founders understand what it means to be displaced: they were forced to leave Ukraine themselves, when the full-scale Russian invasion began in 2022…
This year, we’ve partnered with Brightseeds, investing £10,000 in their Summer Schools initiative, which finds free places for Ukrainian schoolchildren on residential educational programmes in the UK. The project is designed to give Ukrainian students displaced by war an international education experience, to bolster self-confidence, and, most importantly, to offer a glimpse of a brighter future.
Their mission is very close to theirhearts: most of the Brightseeds team are Ukrainian, now either displaced andliving in the UK or working remotely from Ukraine. In fact, co-founders Valeriaand Tetyana Samborska – a daughter and mother from Kyiv, Ukraine – were forcedto flee their home in February 2022, when the full-scale Russian invasionbegan.
With the help of our third co-founder, KateHargreaves, they relocated and found safety in the UK. Once they wereestablished, they got to work helping other Ukrainians safely relocate andadapt to life in Britain. They quickly saw how fundamental a grasp of theEnglish language was to Ukrainians’ successful adaptation to the UK, and usingtheir decades of experience in education, evolved the mission of Brightseeds tomeet the changing needs of Ukrainians.
As the war lengthened, that mission becameclear: to ensure that after years of violence and war, Ukraine’s children areprepared – not just educationally, but emotionally – for the country’s future.
